Colombo, Sri Lanka (December 12, 2025) — In a swift humanitarian response aimed at restoring normalcy for communities devastated by recent inundations, the International Human Rights Commission (IHRC) and the Shri Hela Cultural Collaboration Foundation (SHCCF) partnered with the Sipara Higher Education Institute of Embilipitiya to carry out a major disaster relief operation across the Colombo District.

The joint relief mission targeted severely affected urban and suburban neighborhoods—including Wellampitiya, Kolonnawa, Mulleriyawa, and Sedawatta—where severe floodwaters had completely submerged homes, destroying household belongings and educational materials.

Restoring the Right to Education Following Venerable Thero's Appeal

The targeted intervention was mobilized following a special appeal by Venerable Vitiyala Kavidhaja Thero, who brought attention to the dire plight of local residents and children whose study materials, furniture, and daily necessities were ruined by rising waters.

Prioritizing basic human welfare and the fundamental right to education, the mission focused on supplying essential relief packages alongside comprehensive school kits to ensure affected students could resume their studies without delay.

LKR 1.5 Million Disbursed for Community Empowerment

Led on site by Mr. Menaka M. Sirithilaka—Zonal Coordinator for the IHRC, Director of Uva Province at SHCCF, and Chairman of the Sipara Higher Education Institute—the team distributed essential relief items and educational kits valued at approximately LKR 1,500,000.

"The IHRC and SHCCF are committed to standing at the forefront of any national emergency," stated Mr. Sirithilaka during the distribution. "Our goal extends beyond immediate relief; we aim to empower families with the strength and resources to rebuild their lives." He further pledged the continuous backing of all partner institutions for crisis-affected communities islandwide.
